I’m Daniel, an assistant professor at Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV) in Tarragona, Spain, where I work in the Department of Computer Engineering and Mathematics (DEIM) and the CloudLab research group.

I’m passionate about computers and technology in general, and I love learning and discussing almost anything—I’m a bit of a philosopher by nature. My research revolves around distributed systems and the software that makes large-scale computing usable, from cloud services and middleware to data analytics and machine learning.

My goal is simple: make the cloud easy. It should hide the pain of managing complex systems and let people combine simple building blocks as naturally as tinkering on a laptop—only with the power of a supercomputer behind it.

Research interests

  • Parallel and scalable computing: distributed systems, cloud computing, serverless and FaaS, HPC, and parallel programming.
  • Data-intensive systems: data management, analytics, streaming, and machine-learning infrastructure.
  • Software architectures and middleware: cloud-native systems, microservices, event-driven architectures, and simple abstractions for complex infrastructure.

A little background

I’ve been involved in research since 2016, when I joined CloudLab at URV. I earned my BSc in Computer Engineering from URV in 2017, followed by an MSc in Computational Engineering and Mathematics from UOC and URV in 2018. In 2022, I completed my PhD in Computer Science with an International Distinction at URV, including a research stay at IBM Research Europe in Zurich.

Before returning to URV as an assistant professor in 2025, I worked as a researcher in the Data-Centric Computing team at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center. You can find the complete timeline on my CV.

Teaching

I currently teach Systems and Networks Administration and High-Performance Computing. Over the years, I have also been involved in courses on advanced programming, distributed systems, and cloud architectures.

Beyond work

Outside research and teaching, I enjoy video games, science-fiction and fantasy stories, and learning about psychology and neuroscience.

Jun 23, 2026 I attended the First International Workshop on AI and Serverless (WoAIS1) online. Our research group helped co-organize this first workshop dedicated to the intersection of AI and serverless computing.
Jun 20, 2026 I’m co-chairing the Artifact Evaluation Committee for Middleware 2026 alongside Raúl Gracia-Tinedo, helping promote reproducibility and reusable research artifacts in the systems community.
Jun 05, 2026 I attended ACM SIGMOD/PODS 2026 in Bengaluru and presented our paper Building Stateless Serverless Vector DBs via Block-based Data Partitioning.
May 25, 2026 I’ll be attending ACM SIGMOD/PODS 2026 in Bengaluru from May 31 to June 5, where I’ll present our paper Building Stateless Serverless Vector DBs via Block-based Data Partitioning.
Apr 29, 2026 Our article AI Factories: It’s Time to Rethink the Cloud-HPC Divide has been accepted for publication in Communications of the ACM! An earlier preprint is available on arXiv, but it differs substantially from the accepted article.
